At-home IPL vs salon laser vs waxing: cost, results & safety (India guide)

Short answer: at-home IPL costs a one-time ₹7,500–9,000 and gradually reduces hair over about 12 weeks of fortnightly sessions. Clinic laser is stronger and supervised but a full-body course typically costs ₹1.5 lakh or more. Waxing is instant but temporary and adds up to roughly ₹12,000–17,000 a year. IPL suits light-to-medium skin with dark hair; it is not suitable for very dark skin or for blonde, red, grey or white hair.

How does at-home IPL work?

IPL (intense pulsed light) sends broad-spectrum light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The heat weakens the follicle so hair grows back slower, finer and patchier. Because it needs pigment, it works best when hair is darker than the skin around it.

Is IPL safe for Indian skin tones?

At-home IPL works best on light to medium skin (Fitzpatrick types I–IV) with black or brown hair. Deeper brown skin (type V) should always patch-test on the lowest setting first and wait 24 hours. It is not suitable for very dark skin (type VI), and it won't work on blonde, red, grey or white hair. Major manufacturers give similar guidance. If you're unsure, a dermatologist can tell you your skin type — or send us a photo on WhatsApp and we'll help.

Avoid treating tattoos, dark moles, tanned or broken skin, and consult a doctor first if you are pregnant, have a skin condition or take photosensitising medication.

How often should I use it?

Shave the area first (don't wax or pluck — IPL needs the root). Treat once every 2 weeks for the first 12 weeks, then once a month for maintenance. Using it more often does not speed things up and can irritate skin. Most people notice a difference around sessions 4–6; hormonal areas such as the chin can take longer.

Is at-home IPL cheaper than laser?

Yes, by a wide margin for most people. A single full-body clinic session is listed at around ₹26,000 by Oliva, and full courses commonly run ₹60,000 to ₹2 lakh. A Signaxo IPL device costs ₹7,549–8,994 once. Clinic lasers are more powerful and professionally supervised, so they can be the better choice for darker skin tones or very coarse hair.

Who should choose a clinic instead?

  • You have deep brown to very dark skin (types V–VI).
  • You want the fastest, most powerful treatment and professional supervision.
  • You have a medical condition such as PCOS with rapid regrowth and want a doctor-led plan — IPL can still help with maintenance between clinic sessions.
