Short answer: underarms are often one of the areas that responds best to at-home IPL, because the hair is usually dark and coarse. On the bikini line, treat only the outer skin, never genital skin or mucosa. Start on the lowest level, skip skin that's noticeably darker than the rest of your body, and follow a 12-week plan. Results vary.
Why do underarms often respond well to IPL?
IPL targets the pigment in hair. Underarm hair tends to be dark and thick, which gives IPL plenty to work with. For many people with suitable skin, the underarms are where they first notice finer, slower regrowth, often around session 4–6.
It's also where the everyday benefit is most obvious. In Indian summers, daily shaving on sweaty, sensitive skin often means razor bumps and irritation. Fewer shaves is a real quality-of-life change.
You'll find our devices in the IPL hair removal collection. Before choosing, check your suitability, because underarm and bikini skin need a closer look than legs.
What if your underarm or bikini skin is darker?
Many people have underarm and bikini-area skin that's darker than the rest of their body. This matters for IPL, because darker skin absorbs more of the light and raises the risk of burns or dark marks.
- Judge your skin tone in that area, not on your arm. Our IPL skin-tone checker can help.
- If the skin there is deep brown, patch-test on the lowest level and wait 24–48 hours before continuing.
- If it's very deep brown to black, skip IPL on that area and keep trimming or shaving.
One more honest point: IPL reduces hair. It isn't a pigment treatment and won't lighten underarm skin. Some people feel their underarms look smoother simply because they shave less often, but that's a side effect of less shaving, not a skin-colour change.
Bikini line: where to treat, and where not to
- Treat: the external bikini line, meaning the skin along the edges of your underwear or swimwear, and the upper inner thigh.
- Never treat: genital skin, mucosa or the labia.
- Skip: darker skin folds, moles, and any area with ingrown hairs that are red or inflamed.
Underarms vs bikini line at a glance
| Underarms | Bikini line | |
|---|---|---|
| Where to flash | The whole hair-bearing area of the underarm | External bikini line and upper inner thigh only |
| Where not to flash | Noticeably darker patches, moles, broken skin | Genital skin, mucosa, darker skin folds, moles |
| Starting level | Lowest; increase slowly | Lowest; increase slowly |
| Positioning tip | Raise your arm above your head to flatten the skin | Sit or lie with one knee bent outwards; stretch the skin gently |
| Aftercare tip | No scented deodorant or products with alcohol for 24 hours | Loose cotton underwear for the rest of the day |
How should you prep: trim, then shave
For both areas, the aim is a close shave with the root left in place.
- Trim longer hair first. A bikini trimmer like the Sharp 5-in-1 trimmer or the compact Edge 4-in-1 trimmer takes hair down short without tugging.
- Then shave closely. Use a fresh blade and gel, following the direction of growth to reduce bumps.
- Time it right. Shave a few hours before your session, or the night before if your skin is prone to razor bumps.
- Clean and dry. No deodorant, powder, oil or lotion on the skin during the session.
Don't wax or pluck at any point during your IPL plan. IPL needs the root to absorb the light.
How do you make sessions more comfortable?
- Start on the lowest level and move up one step at a time only if it feels fine. These areas are more sensitive than legs.
- Stretch the skin flat so the window makes full contact.
- Cool the skin first. A chilled Frost ice globe before and after the session helps with the warm snap. Pat the skin completely dry before flashing.
- Pick your timing. Some people find their skin more sensitive around their period, so schedule sessions for another week if that's you.
- One flash per spot. Don't go over the same area twice in a session.
What will regrowth look like as you go?
Most people don't see much change after the first one or two sessions, because IPL only affects hairs that are actively growing at the time. Over the following sessions, many notice that:
- stubble takes longer to appear after shaving
- regrowth comes back finer and lighter
- patches appear where hair grows back less densely
One area may respond sooner than another, because hair thickness and colour vary across the body. Keep going with the full plan even if one area is ahead of the other. Results vary.
What if you get razor bumps or ingrown hairs?
Underarms and the bikini line are the areas most prone to razor bumps, especially in hot, humid weather. A few tips during your IPL plan:
- Trim first so the razor isn't dragging through long hair.
- Always shave with a fresh blade and gel, never on dry skin.
- Don't flash over red, inflamed bumps or ingrown hairs. Skip those spots for that session.
- Exfoliate gently a couple of times a week between sessions, but not within 24 hours after one.
Many people find that as regrowth becomes finer, they shave less often, which gives the skin more time to settle.
How do you plan around summer, swimming and travel?
- Beach holidays: the bikini line can tan quickly. Pause sessions until any tan fades, usually about 2 weeks, and then pick up the plan again.
- Swimming: avoid chlorinated pools for 24 hours after a session.
- Travel: if you miss a session, just do it when you're back. Don't double up to catch up.
- Hygiene: wipe the device window clean after every session, especially after bikini-line use, and keep your device to yourself.
What is the 12-week plan for underarms and bikini line?
The plan is the same as for other body areas: one session every 2 weeks for 12 weeks (about 6 sessions), then roughly once a month to maintain. Many people notice finer regrowth by session 4–6. Our step-by-step IPL guide includes a full session table and common mistakes to avoid.
Aftercare for 24 hours
- Skip scented deodorant, antiperspirant with alcohol, body sprays and perfumes on the underarms.
- Avoid the gym, hot showers, saunas and swimming pools.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing.
- No scrubs. Gentle exfoliation after the first day can help with ingrown hairs.
- Use sunscreen on the bikini line if you're heading to the beach or pool during your plan.
Who should not use IPL?
- Best suited: skin Types I–IV (very fair to wheatish or medium brown) with black, dark brown or brown hair.
- Type V (deep brown): patch-test on the lowest level and wait 24–48 hours. A dermatologist-supervised laser is often the safer choice for deeper skin.
- Not for: Type VI (very deep brown to black) skin, or blonde, red, grey or white hair.
- Never flash: tattoos, dark moles or birthmarks, tanned or sunburnt skin, broken or infected skin, or anywhere near the eyes.
- Ask your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take photosensitising medication (for example isotretinoin or some antibiotics), have epilepsy or light sensitivity, or have eczema or psoriasis in the area.
